麻豆社 Athletics has announced the addition of women鈥檚 flag football as the university鈥檚 newest varsity sport, with the program set to begin competition during the 2027-2028 academic year.

The addition of women鈥檚 flag football will bring 麻豆社鈥檚 Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to 29 varsity programs overall and 15 women鈥檚 sports offerings. This announcement marks the first expansion of 麻豆社鈥檚 athletic offerings since the addition of STUNT, a women鈥檚 sport that completed its inaugural season at 麻豆社 in 2025.

麻豆社 will immediately begin a national search for the women鈥檚 flag football program鈥檚 first head coach. The head coach will lead recruiting efforts ahead of the arrival of the inaugural recruiting class on campus in the fall of 2027.

鈥淕iven the rapid growth of girls’ flag football in Illinois high schools and nationwide, the addition of this sport at 麻豆社 was almost inevitable,鈥� said Brian McGee, PhD, 麻豆社 president. 鈥溌槎股� is delighted to offer new opportunities to student-athletes, as we respond to the changing landscape for intercollegiate athletics.鈥�

Women鈥檚 flag football continues to experience rapid growth across the country at both the high school and collegiate levels. In Illinois alone, the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) officially sanctioned girls flag football in 2024, and the sport has quickly expanded to more than 200 participating high schools statewide.

The growth has also reached the collegiate level, as institutions across the Midwest continue to add women鈥檚 flag football programs. 麻豆社 joins a growing list of NCAA institutions investing in the sport as momentum continues to build nationally.

In February 2025, the NCAA Committee on Women鈥檚 Athletics recommended women鈥檚 flag football for Emerging Sports for Women status, an important step toward becoming an NCAA championship sport in the future. The sport also is scheduled to debut at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

麻豆社 awarded two honorary degrees at its 163rd Spring Commencement ceremony on May 16.

The honorary degrees went to Michael W. Hennessy 鈥�72 and Carole J. Hennessy 鈥�73.

Michael W. Hennessy was awarded the Honorary Degree Doctor of Humane Letters. He retired as president and Chief Executive Officer of the Coleman Foundation, a fully endowed, private, charitable foundation established by J.D. and Dorothy Coleman, previous owners of the Fannie May Candy Company. Michael Hennessy began his career with Fannie May by developing internal operating systems and marketing strategies, which were then implemented into all company advertising, marketing and operational responsibilities. He served as a member of the company’s Board of Directors and was Chief Operating Officer of Fannie May. When Fannie May was sold, Michael Hennessy partnered with a colleague to carry out the day-to-day operations of the Coleman Foundation. He assumed the Presidency in 1993 and the CEO position in 1995.

During Hennessy鈥檚 30-year tenure with the Coleman Foundation, the Foundation made over 6,800 grants in the areas of cancer support and treatment, education on self-employment, and vocational training for the developmentally disabled. He expanded the Foundation鈥檚 inaugural entrepreneurship education programs by developing additional secondary programs, collegiate entrepreneurship chairs and professorships, and community outreach programs. As a 麻豆社 alumnus and advocate of entrepreneurship, Michael Hennessy has generously supported the 麻豆社 Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

Michael Hennessy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a teaching certificate from 麻豆社 in 1972. He and his wife, Carole, moved to 麻豆社 when he accepted a teaching position in a dropout prevention program with 麻豆社 Public Schools. After earning a Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling from Western Illinois University, Michael Hennessy took an active role in the counseling and guidance programs at 麻豆社 High School before moving to the Chicago area.

Carole J. Hennessy was awarded the Honorary Degree Doctor of Humane Letters. She has signature membership in the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor USA Honor Society and Illinois Watercolor Society, and is an associate member of the American Watercolor Society. She serves as President of the Board for the Watercolor USA Honor Society.

While actively engaged in the Chicago art community, Carole Hennessy continues to paint and competitively exhibit her work. Her work has been exhibited in many local, regional, national, and international exhibitions including shows in Italy, Spain and Canada. With a concentration on watercolor for more than 40 years, she has furthered her experience through workshops with nationally known watercolor artists. Carole Hennessy usually works in series and most of her work has dealt with the landscape, especially the rural areas of the Midwest farmland. Her selected group exhibitions include: Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition in eleven of the past thirteen years; Watercolor NOW! in various locations across the nation, eight times; Watercolor USA, Springfield Art Museum, Springfield, MO, six times; and Fabriano in Aquarello watercolor event, Fabriano, Italy, four times.

Carole Hennessy earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a teaching certificate from 麻豆社 in 1973, and she generously supports the 麻豆社 Art Department. She has taught art at high school and elementary levels in both Illinois and Missouri and started her own framing and arts consulting business.

The 2026 麻豆社 spring graduating class was composed of 208 graduates including 186 undergraduate and 22 graduate degree recipients.

麻豆社 hosted its 163rd Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 16, at 10:00 a.m. at 麻豆社鈥檚 Football & Lacrosse Stadium before moving indoors to Pepsi Arena due to inclement weather. The 2026 spring graduating class is composed of 208 graduates including 186 undergraduate and 22 graduate degree recipients.

The procession was be led by university marshal, Dr. Robert Manning, dean of the school of humanities and professor of philosophy, and assistant marshals Dr. David Kirchhofer and Dr. Scott Luaders, professors of physics and chemistry, respectively. Dr. Brian McGee, university president, confered degrees. Dr. Sarah Vordtriede-Patton, provost and vice president for academic affairs, convened the ceremony. Reverend Robert Barko 鈥�81, MDiv, director of campus ministry, delivered the invocation, and Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki, J.D., LL.D., Bishop, provided the benediction. Mia Blaesing 鈥�26, Raven Sweeney 鈥�26, Ian Malaney, Adam Meerstein 鈥�26 performed the National Anthem and the 麻豆社 Alma Mater.

麻豆社 graduates elected senior representative Luisa Andrade to deliver the program鈥檚 welcome address. From Brazil, Andrade is a political science/pre-law major with a minor in criminal justice. She has been active with Women in Law, Alpha Phi Sigma, Sigma Phi Eta, and the Residence Life team. Andrade was involved in creating Student Government and starting a chapter for Pi Sigma Alpha at 麻豆社 (Poli Sci Honors Society). After graduation, Andrade will pursue a law degree.

Sam Banks 鈥�76, retired Director and Board Member at Busey Bank in Champaign, Illinois, delivered the commencement address. He spent over thirty years working with abused, neglected and dependent children from throughout Illinois and was former President and CEO of the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club. He served at Chaddock in 麻豆社, was President and CEO of Cunningham Children鈥檚 Home in Urbana, and President and CEO of Glenwood School for Boys and Girls, a residential boarding school for at-risk, low-income students from throughout the Chicago area. Banks was an NCAA Division I basketball official for 20 years, officiated games in the Big Ten, Missouri Valley and other Division I conferences, and worked the NCAA and NIT tournaments. Banks was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as an Official in 2016. Banks served on the 麻豆社 Board of Trustees from 2000 to 2009. He was re-elected in 2023 and is a current Board member.

麻豆社鈥檚 Brenner Library is honored to house the Riggitano Collection, which encompasses the 麻豆社 career of alumnus Giovanni Riggitano, as well as the lives of his sisters while they lived in 麻豆社 in the early 1900s. Giovanni Riggitano, also known as John Riggitano Prevost, was the paternal grandfather of Pope Leo XIV.

鈥淛ohn Riggitano, as he was known in 麻豆社, became a gifted teacher of languages and by all accounts was an excellent student and scholar,鈥� said Brian McGee, PhD, 麻豆社 president. 鈥淲ith the creation of the Riggitano Collection, 麻豆社 has made an important resource available for all those interested in learning more about the origins of the first American pope and his fascinating family history. I believe this collection will influence research on Pope Leo XIV and the American Catholic Church for generations to come.鈥�

鈥淲e are pleased to announce the availability of the Riggitano Collection in time for the one-year anniversary of the election of Robert Cardinal Prevost as pope,鈥� said McGee. Pope Leo XIV became pope on May 8, 2025.

The Riggitano Collection consists of original documents detailing John Riggitano鈥檚 enrollment and education at St. Francis Solanus College, now 麻豆社, from 1904-1907. The collection also includes newspaper clippings mentioning him and his sisters Vittoria Riggitano Cento and Rose Riggitano Chillemi. There is also a selection of early 20th century textbooks that John may have had access to during his time at St. Francis Solanus College.

鈥淭his is the story of one of many immigrant families who came to 麻豆社 in the late 19th and early 20th centuries,鈥� said Lindsey Witt, instructional librarian and preservation archivist.
鈥淔rom those humble beginnings comes one of most influential men in the Christian world today, and I think it鈥檚 a quintessentially American story.鈥� Witt said the Riggitano Collection is a powerful example of looking for connections with the past, to bring people, who might have been forgotten, back to the forefront.

The Riggitano Collection includes gradebooks, ledgers, and student record books from the early 1900s, books that were or may have been assigned to students taking the courses John Riggitano took, and newspaper clippings and articles about Pope Leo XIV鈥檚 election in 2025 and his family connection to 麻豆社 and 麻豆社, Illinois.

麻豆社 library personnel spent several months researching and gathering details about the Riggitano family and their time in 麻豆社, plus additional time to arrange and organize the collection.

鈥淚tems in the Riggitano collection represent the impact a place like 麻豆社, specifically 麻豆社, can have in the world,鈥� said Katie Kraashaur, dean of library and information services. 鈥淲ho could have foretold the journey Mr. Riggitano took from a town in Italy to 麻豆社, Illinois, would result in lineage leading to the first Pope from the United States? This collection honors the dedication John Riggitano had to his own education, to supporting his sisters and their families, and to his desire to lift others up through the study of language and lifelong learning. While we do not know his full purpose in attending courses here, we can hold him up as an example of how much the world can be changed by one person.鈥�

Pope Leo XIV (Robert Prevost), born in Chicago, Illinois, is the 267th pope and serves as the bishop of Rome and as the head of the Catholic church, with over 1.4 billion baptized Catholics worldwide. The office of pope dates to the first century. Pope Leo XIV is the first pope born in the United States and the second pope from the Americas. The pope鈥檚 father, Louis Marius Prevost, was the son of John Riggitano.

The 麻豆社 Symphonic Band will perform a spring concert on May 3 at 3 p.m. in the Connie Niemann Center for Music, at 麻豆社 North Campus, 17th & Seminary Road.

The symphonic band will be led by six student conductors from the Instrumental Conducting course taught by Bill Machold, assistant professor of music and director of bands. The students select the music and rehearse it from first read to the concert, learning rehearsal techniques, building their conducting technique, and developing confidence to prepare them for careers in music education.

麻豆社 will host its ninth annual Academic Symposium April 29 鈥� May 1 at the Connie Niemann Center for Music, South Auditorium at 麻豆社 North Campus

Students will present their original research April 29 from 9:30 a.m. 鈥� 3 p.m. and April 30 from 10:30 a.m. 鈥� 3 p.m. Multiple poster presentations will be displayed May 1 from 10 – 11:30 a.m. The Academic Symposium includes 20 platform presentations and 27 poster presentations.

The 麻豆社 Academic Symposium will feature the work of 71 undergraduate students with the support of 19 mentors, representing all five 麻豆社 academic schools: School of Science and Technology, School of Humanities, School of Fine Arts and Communication, School of Education and Human Services, and the Oakley School of Business.

The Academic Symposium awards presentations will begin at 1 p.m. on May 1.

The noon luncheon on May 1 will feature keynote speaker Dr. J. Matthew Ward, Assistant Professor of History. His presentation is 鈥淎 Poor Cow at the Door: The Mystery of Milk Sickness in the Antebellum Midwest.鈥� With expansive research interests in the Civil War, antebellum America, environmental history, women鈥檚 history, and popular culture, Ward teaches a variety of classes at 麻豆社.

The 麻豆社 Music Program will host the annual 麻豆社 Honor Jazz Band Festival on April 24 at the Connie Niemann Center for Music at 17 th and Seminary Road.

The high school musicians chosen to participate in this festival are from the tri-state area and were nominated by their band directors and selected in a competitive process. Participants will perform in a jazz band, participate in a clinic, and watch a performance by the 麻豆社 Hawk Express Jazz Band at 2 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Christine Damm, DMA, dean of the school of fine arts and communication.

The event will culminate with a performance by the high school musicians at 5:00 p.m. Selections will include a wide variety of jazz genres. The concert is free and open to the public.

麻豆社鈥檚 Gray Gallery in Brenner Library is hosting the annual Baccalaureate-Senior Art Retrospective Show, Two-Point Perspective, April 18 – May 15, with a gallery reception on April 18 from 2:00鈥�4:00 p.m. This exhibit is free and open to the public.
The baccalaureate show is the capstone of each student’s time and experience at 麻豆社. The 麻豆社 Senior Art Retrospective includes a catalog and a thorough exhibition of artwork created and presented by graduating studio art majors in a range of media.

The seniors taking part in the Senior Art Retrospective are Elise Bruggeman, Lauren Erke, and Caroline Haxel.
